Why the New York Yankees' Recent Hot Streak Is a Reason To Get Excited

by Christopher Mango

Though the Yankees' five-game winning streak has come against an offensively-challenged Atlanta team and a hapless and banged-up bunch of Mets, a number of occurrences over the past week should give Yankee fans like myself reasons to be encouraged as the team prepares for two more weeks of baseball prior to the All-Star break.

Though this collection of ballplayers may not exactly replicate the championship-winning teams of the late-'90s, the team's play in the last week should encourage both the Yankee brass and the enormous fan base that the team possesses.

Yankees pitcher Phil Hughes rides scoreless streak into more important appearances

by Matt Gelb

With the tying run on second with two outs in the sixth inning, Phil Hughes was called upon. One pitch later, he was back in the dugout.

"It was easy," Hughes said.

Pitching in his highest leveraged situation this season -- and entering a close game mid-inning for the first time -- Hughes showed great proficiency in relief. After the one pitch to retire Omir Santos in the sixth, he allowed a leadoff walk to Luis Castillo in the seventh, but set the Mets down in order after that on 10 pitches.

New York Yankees pitcher Chien-Ming Wang has a win

by Matt Gelb

Chien-Ming Wang went 379 days in between victories, and for a pitcher who once won a total of 38 games over two seasons, it felt like forever.

He watched from the clubhouse as the Yankees bullpen preserved it. And the quiet Wang appeared as relaxed as he could be afterward.

"I waited too long," he said.

But Chien-Ming finally earned win No. 1 in 2009 with his effort Sunday against the Mets. It came in start No. 8 and it wasn't the finest 5 1/3 innings ever seen, but it could be the most important 16 outs of Wang's career.

Mariano Rivera saves 500th career game as New York Yankees complete sweep of New York Mets with 4-2 win

by Matt Gelb

Mariano Rivera has save No. 500. And RBI No. 1.

Rivera needed four outs to become the second pitcher ever to 500 saves -- and provided himself some own insurance with a good eye at the plate -- as the Yankees swept the Mets with a 4-2 victory Sunday night.

In the eighth, Rivera entered with runners on first and second and struck out Omir Santos on eight pitches. And in the ninth Rivera allowed a two-out single to Daniel Murphy before Alex Cora grounded out to second.

Molina inches closer to return to NY Yankees

By Jared Diamond

NEW YORK -- Jose Molina's return to the Yankees appears to be coming closer. The backup catcher, who strained his left quad on May 7, ran the bases before Sunday's game against the Mets and said afterward he felt no pain. He will try to run the bases again on Tuesday and could be behind the plate for New York within a couple of weeks.

"I could play today," Molina said. "I don't know how it would be, but I feel like I could play."

Mariners-LA Dodgers: Seattle Takes Two-of-Three from LA

by Griffin Cooper

A three-run, third-inning rally turned out to be all the Mariners would need on Sunday, as they beat the LA Dodgers 4-2 and took the best-of-three series.

This was the first test for the Mariners on this vigorous road trip, and they passed with flying colors.

I, along with many other Mariners fans, would probably have been happy with just taking one out of three, but today’s game was icing on the cake and the M’s now sit 39-36, three games over .500.

NEW YORK -- The flu is spreading through the Yankees clubhouse and Derek Jeter and Johnny Damon will not start Saturday night.

New York Yankees pitcher A.J. Burnett not afraid to think about no-hit bid

A.J. Burnett was not oblivious. He had a no-hitter and he was thinking about it.

"I look up when it's happening and I want to throw one," Burnett said. "I was pretty much shooting for it from the fourth on."

All the ingredients were there, it appeared. Melky Cabrera made two sparkling plays in left field to preserve the no-hitter. The Mets offense, already stymied the night before by CC Sabathia, looked just as feeble. And Burnett was striking out batters at a high pace.

Slumping New York Yankees Must Make Drastic Changes

by Perry Arnold

Alex Rodriguez is just the poster boy for the recent New York Yankees slump.

A-Rod is now hitting .224 and over the past two weeks has been much worse than that number would indicate.

But a host of Yankee players are sliding, and their ineptitude is reflected in the team's record and in the standings.

When the Yankees went into Boston on June 9 to start a three-game series with the Sox, their record was 34-23, and they were in first place in the American League East by one game.

Now they stand at 38-32 and are five games behind Boston.

Alex Rodriguez keys outburst, New York Yankees beat Atlanta Braves, 11-7

NY Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez took over Thursday night's 11-7 victory against the Braves, using the game to demonstrate that despite his struggles to bounce back from hip surgery, he remains a force.

Dogged by questions about a recent slump and the security of his spot as the cleanup hitter, Rodriguez tied Reggie Jackson for 11th place on the all-time home run list with 563. The homer snapped a drought of 69 road at-bats with a home run, his longest since 1997.

Rodriguez drove in four runs, the first on a homer to straightaway center field at spacious Turner Field. He finished 3-for-5 with four RBIs.

A.J. Burnett has suspension reduced to five games

Major League Baseball reduced the suspension of New York Yankees pitcher A.J. Burnett to five games on Sunday.

Burnett was originally suspended six games and fined an undisclosed amount for an incident during a game against the Texas Rangers on June 2.

Under a settlement reached with Major League Baseball, Yankees pitcher A.J. Burnett had his six-game suspension for throwing at a batter reduced to five games. He began serving the suspension on Saturday.

The suspension -- which came after Burnett threw near the head of the Rangers' Nelson Cruz on June 2, supposedly in retaliation of Vicente Padilla hitting Mark Teixeira -- won't make a major impact on the rotation. The penalty pushed Burnett's next start back just one day, to Saturday at Citi Field against the Mets.

Chien-Ming Wang's position in the Yankees starting rotation grew more tenuous on Wednesday night, when the pitcher's general ineffectiveness over 2 2/3 brutal innings in a 6-5 loss to the Red Sox raised what's become a familiar question surrounding Wang this season: What now? What would you do?

Manager Joe Girardi was noncommittal about whether Wang would make his next scheduled start, leaving the door open for the Yankees to bump the right-hander from the rotation in favor of another pitcher, perhaps Phil Hughes.

The news came down after Joe Girardi's pregame meeting with the media, so whether or not the Yankees would move Phil Hughes into Burnett's spot, should the suspension hold, is unclear.

Phil Hughes to the New York Yankees Bullpen: Stupid Move

by Perry Arnold

New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi and General Manager Brian Cashman announced yesterday that Chien-Ming Wang will return to the starting rotation on Thursday and that Phil Hughes will go to the bullpen.

They also announced that they will re-evaluate the decision in about two weeks and decide at that point whether Hughes should return to Scranton to get work as a starter.

This is a dangerous move by the Yankees brain trust.

Oakland Athletics: MLB Breakdown 2009

by Griffin Cooper

The Oakland Athletics were a fairly forgettable team in 2008, and until their young pitching staff progresses a little bit, I anticipate them staying that way for a couple more years.

The A's traded away their lone ace Rich Harden to the Chicago Cubs before the deadline last season. Unfortunately, with all of the injuries he suffered with the A's, he wasn't really able to do much for them.

Unfortunately, this left Oakland's starting rotation pretty much empty, Justin Duchscherer being the exception, although he is out until June.

Hey Yankee Fans, Quit Complaining About Joba Starting!

by DJ

I live in NYC. It is a place where sports are taken very seriously. New York has some of the best fans in the world because they're passionate and some of them are even knowledgeable. I am a young sports fan, not even 20 yet, but baseball has always been my sport. I grew up during the latest Yankees Dynasty. Everyone remembers the 1996 team and the ones who followed leading to 4 World Series Titles in 5 years. When Yankee fans look at how to fix the 2009 team (which is a 1/2 game out of 1st place), they see the bullpen as an area for concern. Well the bullpen is pretty shaky, and those passionate New Yorkers want to see their hero Joba Chamberlain return to the bullpen. NO!!!

New York Yankees' Chien-Ming Wang to pitch in minors; Johnny Damon, Phil Coke banged up

by Marc Carig

NEW YORK -- Yankees pitcher Chien-Ming Wang will make at least one more minor league rehab start -- on Friday against the Red Sox Triple-A affiliate in Pawtucket, R.I. -- before he is reinstated from the disabled list.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said the team wants to see more consistency and explosion from Wang's sinker -- which is his primary pitch -- before he makes his return to the major leagues. Wang has been out with hip weakness related to the foot injury that he suffered last season.

New York Yankees find inspiration in 'fighter'

by Marc Carig

NEW YORK -- There's been no shortage of inspiration around Yankee Stadium lately. And on Wednesday, the Yankees found plenty in 38-year-old Polly Tompkins. In April, the first grade teacher and Yankees fan from Candor, N.Y. was diagnosed with Stage 4 melanoma.

The Yankees honored Tompkins by making her the honorary bat girl. She also threw out the first pitch. She spent her time before the game meeting various Yankees, including Derek Jeter and Reggie Jackson. Just before getting a photo of herself with Mr. October, Tompkins called it "the best day of my life."

Johnny Damon becoming face of more relaxed, more fun New York Yankees

by Steve Politi

NEW YORK -- At the first kangaroo court the Yankees have convened in more than 15 years, Johnny Damon was tried and convicted of being -- what else? -- Johnny Damon.

He showed up late for court in his designer jeans and spiked hair, not his pinstripes, making the verdict easy for judge Mariano Rivera. The fine: $100. Somebody asked Damon which charity would get his money.

Have the New York Yankees found their shortstop of the future? Let's hope

by Marc Carig

NEW YORK -- CC Sabathia looked awesome again. But the most impressive throws at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday night came not from the mammoth lefty, but from a pint-sized Garden State native named Tommy Belsky.

At six years old, Belsky is not only battling cancer, he's winning. The disease has been in remission for a year. And if arm strength is any indication, he's going to be fine.

Girardi's New York Yankees Pick Right Time To Get Hot

by Mets Police

This time last week I wrote that it would be a very crucial time for Joe Girardi. With the Mets on the West Coast and the lazier newspapers telling us "Mets at Los Angeles, night" (that's you Star-Ledger) it's easy for the Mets to turn halfway invisible. It took Vin Scully making fun of them to get daylight yesterday.

But this is a Yankees column. As Craig Carton put it this morning, a ho hum late loss for the Mets and the Yankees have won seven in a row, so it's a Yankees day.

New York Yankees' A.J. Burnett is the piemaster

by Marc Carig

RECIPE FOR A CELEBRATION

After an early season Yankees' walk-off victory authored by Melky Cabrera, A.J. Burnett was aghast. Smearing whipped cream in the face of a player just before a postgame television interview has been a part of the game since, well, the postgame television interview. But the tradition apparently never made it to Yankee Stadium -- until this past weekend.

New York Yankees' Brett Gardner baffled by right shoulder injury

by Marc Carig

NEW YORK -- Yankees center fielder Brett Gardner is day-to-day with a bruise after he jammed his right shoulder on Sunday while sliding into home plate.

"The way it felt this morning, I guess I'm lucky it isn't worse than it was," Gardner said.

Gardner said he didn't feel anything after the slide itself. But when he woke up in the middle of the night in pain, he alerted trainers in the morning. An MRI found inflammation in the shoulder, though Gardner remains baffled at how he suffered the injury.

Recap: NY Yankees vs. Minnesota

Johnny Damon's homer in the 10th inning was the difference, as the New York Yankees edged the Minnesota Twins, 3-2, in the third tilt of a four-game set from Yankee Stadium.

It was the third straight time the Yankees won a game in their final at-bat and the fifth this season overall.

Damon finished 3-for-4, and Alex Rodriguez also slugged a solo homer for the Yankees, who won their season-high fifth straight game. Melky Cabrera drove in the other run in the win. Alfredo Aceves (2-0) got the win after tossing a perfect 10th inning.

"I noticed the first two swings I had I was just a little bit too long," said Damon. "I shortened up my stroke some and fortunately I got a pitch to hit."

Ming Wang says he's ready to return from injury after four-hit minor-league start

by Marc Carig

In the final inning of his rehab start with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Yankees right-hander Chien-Ming Wang fell behind in the count to Columbus Clippers outfielder Trevor Crowe, one of the few times Sunday that he ceded control of an at-bat to a hitter.

So, Wang climbed down off the mound, took a moment to compose himself, and then fired a 90 mph sinker that Crowe foolishly tried to drive. Instead, he flied out to center and Wang survived the closest thing to a jam that he'd see on this day.

In his second rehab start as he attempts to come back from muscle weakness in his hips, Wang fired a four-hit shutout to lead the Yankees to a 3-0 victory over the Columbus Clippers.

New York Yankees make minor-league trade for right-hander Romulo Sanchez

Sanchez, who has appeared in 26 big leagues games spread over the 2007 and 208 seasons, was 1-0 with a 4.38 in 10 appearances for Triple-A Indianapolis.

Recap: Toronto vs. NY Yankees

Hideki Matsui's homer in the eighth inning was the difference, as the New York Yankees edged the Toronto Blue Jays, 3-2, in the finale of a three-game set from the Rogers Centre.

Derek Jeter, in his first game back after missing the previous two, and Nick Swisher also ended with an RBI each for New York, which finished a six-game road trip at 4-2. Johnny Damon had a double to extend his extra-base hitting streak to 10 games. The streak ties a franchise record set by Don Mattingly in 1987 and matched by Paul O'Neill in 2001.

CC Sabathia (3-3) got the win after going eight innings and giving up just two runs on five hits. Mariano Rivera worked a 1-2-3 ninth to record his seventh save of the year.

Why Can the New York Yankees Not Prevent Injuries?

They are: starting right fielder, Xavier Nady; relief pitcher, Brian Bruney; relief pitcher, Damaso Marte; catcher, Jorge Posada; catcher, Jose Molina; pitcher, Chien Ming-Wang; utility infielder, Cody Ransom.

Another player, Alex Rodriguez, just came off the DL last Friday.

And three other players are sitting right now with no certainty as to when the will return to the lineup.

Rooting for the NY Yankees using NY Yankees Accessories, NY Yankees Jewelry, and NY Yankees gifts!

Though it’s just spring training and not exactly the regular season, the Cardinals are believed to be a team that is respectable and unpredictable come the regular season. Fans like me believe they’ll make some noise even in the playoffs. How would you support the Cards this season because I plan to support them by donning NY Yankees Merchandise - NY Yankees Accessories, NY Yankees Jewelry, and getting my friends NY Yankees Gifts that we all could use during the games?

When it comes to NY Yankees gift, NY Yankees accessories, and NY Yankees jewelry, I am probably one of their best customers out there. I’ve found out that the best place to get my Cards fix is at an online NY Yankees Team Shop. Why an online St. Louise Cardinals team shop? Well, for one, there’s more choice there.

Take for example the selection at the NY Yankees accessories section. There are literally dozens of great steals, from Cardinals Velvet Bags, Cardinals Sunglass, Cards Logo Bottle Opener Key Rings, Photo Albums, and Business Card Holders. The NY Yankees accessories section is a Cards fan’s dream come true.

My second most favorite section to visit is the NY Yankees jewelry section. NY Yankees jewelry isn’t too expensive, but there are a lot of worthwhile items to get, like this one Cardinals Logo Pendant I saw for $21.95, or that Cardinals Agent Series Watch I’ve been eying for $39.95. If you want to make your girlfriend happy, and is she happens to be a fan, get her something from the NY Yankees jewelry selection. Another thing I love about the online NY Yankees Team Shop is that it makes gift giving easy. I just pop into the NY Yankees gifts section and viola! I’ve found some great bargains here, like a Yankees Glass Batter for $21.95 for a friend’s office, a Yankees Replica Mini Helmet for my own cubie, and a Cardinals 3D Logo Ornament for my room.

New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera not worried about recent homers

DETROIT -- Sirens and strobe lights went off during the eighth inning on Wednesday night as a robotic voice over the Comerica Park loudspeakers instructed fans to calmly find the nearest stairway. Perhaps the Yankees bullpen was a bit quick to heed the evacuation order.

As it turns out, it was a false alarm, though could you blame Joe Girardi if he was tempted to break the glass in the ninth, when Jonathan Albaladejo and Mariano Rivera took an 8-1 lead and turned it into a slim 8-6 advantage?

New York Yankees pitchers dealing with injuries

Triple-A right-hander Ian Kennedy will begin taking medication to treat the numbness in the middle finger of his pitching hand. Kennedy will be shut down until Monday, when he is scheduled to undergo a follow-up exam.

In return to New York Yankees, Phil Hughes delivers vintage performance

by Marc Carig

Almost exactly two years ago, in only his second major league start, Phil Hughes was no-hitting the Texas Rangers when he felt a pop in his hamstring, which forced him to leave before he could complete his bid. In one evening, Hughes had seemingly captured what would become the essence of his career, his significant talent trumped by injury.

But what stood out was how dominant Hughes looked before he got hurt that night. Once named the best right-handed pitching prospect in all of baseball, he was as good as the hype had promised.

"It seems like a long time ago," Hughes said, looking back at the last time he felt as good as he did on Tuesday.

Indeed, since that electrifying coming out party, the mega-talent Hughes has endured a baseball odyssey filled with injuries, struggles, setbacks, and now after what he did on Tuesday night against the Tigers, perhaps redemption.

Lineups set as New York Yankees begin abbreviated series against Oakland Athletics

by Star-Ledger

Andy Pettitte faces Dana Eveland as the Yankees and Athletics begin a short series Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium. NY Yankees vs Mumbai Indians

WASHINGTON: Mumbai Indians vs New York Yankees, anyone? The oft-projected dream of big time cricket returning to the United States is being cranked up again with plans for an American Premier League (APL) on the lines of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL).

If that happens, the game could even have a new celebrity fan - US President Barack Obama. On a visit to Trinidad this past weekend, Obama wielded the bat under the tutelage of the great Brian Lara, essaying a left-handed cover drive after dropping in at the stadium named after the country's national hero.
