Alex Rodriguez, Brett Gardner and the New York Yankees

By Marc Carig

TAMPA, Fla. -- Some reading to lead off a Tuesday morning:

In case you spent Monday cut off from the rest of the planet, Alex Rodriguez underwent successful surgery on his right hip. Rehab time is still six to nine weeks, though because he underwent the procedure, the rehab time for his scheduled offseason surgery should be shorter.

Cody Ransom remains the top candidate to fill in. Meanwhile, Baseball Musings looks at the Yankees lineup, with and without A-Rod.

Brett Gardner hit his third home run of Grapefruit League play on Monday. Yep, that's good enough for the team lead. Good timing for this article, which had been planned for Tuesday's print editions, regardless of Gardner's performance the day before.

To me, of all the traditional baseball numbers, defensive statistics were the most misleading. But good work in recent years has hastened the introduction of much more meaningful defensive statistics. Via River Ave. Blues, here's a look at the Yankees based on one of these systems, the John Dewan's plus/minus system.

And finally, Mike Piazza shows Yankees catching prospect Francisco Cervelli some love after the Italian team (and their very Dodgers-like uniforms) booted Canada from the World Baseball Classic.
