Earlier this week the Yankees released a statement saying that Alex Rodriguez had a successful operation on his torn labrum and if all goes according to plan A-Rod will be back on the field in no more than nine weeks.
However there are still questions to be answered at third base while A-Rod is gone. Could the Yankees be attempting to fix their problems at the hot corner with a trade? Or even a surprise signing?
There have been reports that the Yankees have been in talks with the Royals about third baseman Mark Teahen, a four-year veteran who has plenty of talent and experience.
Or possibly another veteran slugger like Adrian Beltre who set the standard for home runs in 2004 with 48. There have been other reports that the Yankees are looking to sign veteran second baseman Mark Grudzielanek who hasn't had much experience at third but has a solid bat and a decent glove.
The Yankees are pretty confident, however, that they can solve this problem from within with either Cody Ransom or Angel Berroa—neither of which would be able to handle such a big opportunity for such a long period of time.
It is understandable that A-Rod is almost irreplaceable, however, there are ways to patch the holes. Even if it means going out and getting a player like Bobby Crosby or even Ty Wigginton. Now this may sound stupid, but just for a few weeks you could also get Ronnie Cedeno or possibly Kevin Millar. I'm not saying that this will be permanent, this is just a quick fix until A-rod comes back.
The Yankees need a big name at third for the home opener. I mean seriously who wants to lose their first home opener? No offense to Cody Ransom or Angel Berroa but the Yankees need someone who can produce in A-Rod's absence.
