Brian Cashman says New York Yankees not actively seeking fill-in for Alex Rodriguez

TAMPA, Fla. -- New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez will remain in Colorado until he's ready to resume baseball activities, general manager Brian Cashman said, though he does not know when the slugger will reach that point.

"When he gets to the point where he's doing functional stuff is when we'll bring him back to Tampa," Cashman said of Rodriguez, who underwent arthroscopic surgery on Monday to repair a torn labrum in his hip.

Doctors estimated that Rodriguez will need six to nine weeks to recover, which would sideline him for the first month of the season. As for acquiring a fill-in for Rodriguez, Cashman said again on Tuesday that he is not actively searching.

"I'm not optimistic about doing anything," he said. "I'm not going to be proactive in trying to do something."

Cody Ransom, a 33-year-old journeyman, is in line to step in for Rodriguez.

"With the team not wanting add payroll, not wanting to hurt the farm system and stuff like that, and we're going to get Alex back, we're going to go with what we have in camp," Cashman said.

Notes: Jorge Posada and Hideki Matsui are both making Wednesday's road trip to Lakeland to play the Detroit Tigers. Manager Joe Girardi said that both will split designated hitter duties. ... Girardi said relievers Edwar Ramirez and Mariano Rivera will throw bullpen sessions on Wednesday.
